Can PCOS Cause Miscarriages? Here’s What Every Woman Should Know

The short answer is yes. Women with PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome) have a higher risk of miscarriage than women without PCOS. Some studies estimate the risk can be anywhere from 30–50%, depending on the individual and other health factors. Sadly, I’m part of that percentage.

So why does PCOS increase the risk?

There isn’t just one reason. PCOS can affect your body in several ways:

  • Insulin resistance, which is common with PCOS, may affect hormone balance and create an environment that’s less supportive of a healthy pregnancy.
  • Hormone imbalances can sometimes affect egg quality and ovulation, making it more difficult to establish and maintain a pregnancy.
  • Low progesterone can also play a role for some women. Progesterone helps support the uterine lining during early pregnancy, which is why some doctors may prescribe progesterone supplements during the first trimester when they’re medically appropriate.

While PCOS can make the journey more challenging, it does not mean pregnancy is impossible.

I’ve been pregnant seven times and today I’m blessed with two beautiful children. My journey included loss, surgeries, lifestyle changes, supplements, doctors I trusted, and a whole lot of faith. It wasn’t easy, but it reminded me that every journey is different.

If you’re trying to conceive with PCOS, don’t lose hope. Work with a healthcare provider you trust, take care of your body, ask questions, advocate for yourself, and remember that your story is still being written.

I’m rooting for you every step of the way.
